7 Steps to create a great job posting or job ad

A job posting is like an ad for your company which should attract top talent. This means your job posting should sound and feel like an ad.

For many years, companies have assumed that the market is filled with candidates who are eager to take up the job as soon as they post the ad, so they post it in a plain vanilla way. Now the market scenario has changed, candidates are picky and want to join companies that challenge their skills and abilities. And trust me, your target candidates are no different. So let us make it easy for the candidates and you too by creating a beautiful and attractive job posting (Job Ad). Follow these 7 steps, that will make a difference.

Here are the 7 steps:

1. THE TITLE

Needs to be Clear and Concise. And also, make it CATCHY.

Marketing Executive Vs Marketing Rock star
Financial Manager Vs Accounting Ninja

Which one do you think will catch the eye of the candidate and make him curious? Go with the trend, don’t fall behind with the traditional ways of requisition requests.

2. THE SHORT DESCRIPTION

Many candidates read the short description first and if they find it relevant they read the complete job posting. So, make sure you nail the short description perfectly. Take some extra time there.

In short description, make sure you have a single paragraph that gives couple of details to the candidates on what is exciting about the job. You need to make it interesting for the candidate so that, he will read the rest of the details.
3. MAKE IT AN INTERESTING READ

Make it an interesting read – if you have given an interesting job title, then make sure rest of the job description also is.

Your job posting should talk to the reader – it is like one on one conversation with them but through text. Use words like “you” and “we”.

So, you have made the candidate read the title and the short description. Now we need to make sure that the rest of the content is also equally interesting. Use keywords about the job or the company that attracts their attention. Add some punch lines or quotes for better engagement.

4. TELL THEM ABOUT THE COMPANY

Give them a brief about how you value them. Potential candidates are always interested in knowing what kind of a company they are going to work for. Also, share the website page where you have published about your company.

Pointers:

  • How many years you’ve been in business
  • Interesting clients or projects
  • Equipment that applicants will be excited (Like a brand new Laptop or some latest gadgets, etc)
  • Work culture facts that will interest them.
5. WHAT IS IN IT FOR THE JOB SEEKERS?

Make sure to point out clearly what the benefits for the job seekers are.

Clearly, mention the skills that the potential candidate needs to have. Everyone need not have all the skills, so clearly mention the “Must Haves” and “Nice to Haves”.

Instead of a lengthy list of points, mention 1 to 3 things about the job and what they need to do. Then provide information on work hours, pay, interesting co-workers, education opportunities, benefits or perks, and anything else applicants will find interesting.
6. DETAILED DESCRIPTION

The detailed job description needs to be very specific. You need to include the skills required, things expected from the candidates and what the candidate can expect if he gets the job. Something about the interview process also helps. Mention clearly how to apply and post that what the steps would be.

7. CLEAR CONTACT DETAILS

Make sure your contact details are clearly and easily available.

We are confident that this approach will get your job postings more views and definitely many candidates will apply.
